Singapore Moss
Vesicularia sp. 'Singapore'
Plantae›Bryophyta›Bryopsida›Hypnaceae
📍 Singapore / Southeast Asia
Singapore Moss is a fine-leaved aquatic moss with a slightly more organised, fan-like branching structure than Java Moss. It grows into dense mounds on hardscape and creates effective moss walls on mesh. Fast-growing and undemanding, it is a popular beginner moss for aquascaping and a favourite refuge for shrimp and fry.
Tank Mates
Shrimp thrive in moss, using it for grazing biofilm and shelter; they do not damage the plant
Excellent algae control and biofilm grazing without harming moss structure
Small, peaceful algae eaters that benefit from moss cover and do not uproot or damage the plant
Tiny, peaceful fish that use moss as shelter and breeding ground without causing damage
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements; creates layered aquascaping
Slow-growing plant that pairs well with moss in hardscape layouts; similar low-light tolerance
Common Diseases
Algae Overgrowth
Green, brown, or black algae coating moss surface; reduced light penetration; moss appears smothered
Increase water changes, reduce light duration to 6-8 hours daily, add algae-eating shrimp or fish (Amano Shrimp, Otocinclus), manually remove excess algae with a soft brush
Nutrient Deficiency
Slow or stunted growth; yellowing or pale coloration; thin, sparse branching
Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer 1-2 times weekly; ensure adequate lighting (low-medium); perform regular water changes to maintain nutrient balance
Melting
Moss turns translucent, becomes mushy, or disintegrates; often occurs after sudden parameter changes
Ensure stable water parameters (pH 6.0-8.0, temperature 18-28°C); avoid drastic changes; improve water circulation; remove affected portions; maintain consistent lighting
Pest Infestation (Hydra, Planaria)
Tiny white or brown tentacled organisms visible on moss; small worms crawling through plant matter
Perform targeted manual removal; increase water flow to dislodge pests; consider introducing predatory shrimp or fish; in severe cases, quarantine moss and treat with hydrogen peroxide dips (short-term exposure)
