South America Moss
Taxiphyllum sp. 'South America'
Plantae›Bryophyta›Bryopsida›Hypnales›Hypnaceae
📍 South America
Flat-growing moss with an orderly, overlapping frond pattern. Creates a very clean, structured look. One of the neatest aquarium mosses.
Tank Mates
Gentle algae grazers that won't damage moss; help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, peaceful shrimp that graze algae without harming delicate moss structure
Algae-eating fish that respect moss and won't uproot or consume it
Small, peaceful community fish that provide movement without disturbing moss
Excellent companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and slow growth
Compatible hardscape-attaching plant with similar care requirements and aesthetic
Common Diseases
Algae Overgrowth
Unwanted algae coating moss fronds, blocking light and reducing aesthetic appeal
Increase water changes, reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, add algae-eating shrimp or fish like Amano Shrimp, and manually remove excess algae
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing or browning fronds, stunted growth, loss of vibrant coloration
Dose liquid fertilizers containing macronutrients (NPK) and micronutrients (iron, trace elements) 1-2 times weekly; ensure adequate fish waste or consider CO2 supplementation
Melting
Fronds becoming translucent, mushy texture, disintegration of moss structure
Improve water quality through frequent water changes, ensure stable temperature (23-28°C), increase aeration, and remove affected portions; melting often resolves with time as moss acclimates
Bacterial Infection
Slimy coating on fronds, foul odor, rapid deterioration of moss structure
Perform 50% water change immediately, improve water circulation with aeration, reduce organic waste buildup, and consider antibacterial treatments if condition persists
