Spiky Moss
Taxiphyllum sp. 'Spiky'
Plantae›Bryophyta›Bryopsida›Hypnaceae
📍 Southeast Asia
Spiky Moss forms distinctively pointed, spiky tufts that radiate outward from attachment points, giving it a starburst appearance. It grows readily on rock, wood, or mesh and is easier to shape than Java Moss due to its tidier, more structured growth habit. Popular in Nature Aquarium styling.
Tank Mates
Gentle algae grazers that won't uproot or damage moss; help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, peaceful shrimp that graze algae without harming moss structure
Peaceful algae-eating fish that won't disturb moss attachments
Small, non-aggressive schooling fish that provide movement without damaging plants
Excellent companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and slow growth rate
Compatible plant species with similar care requirements and aesthetic appeal in Nature Aquarium layouts
Common Diseases
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating moss surface, reduced light penetration, moss appears smothered
Increase water changes, reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, manually remove algae with soft brush, introduce algae-eating shrimp or fish
Nutrient Deficiency
Slow or stunted growth, pale or yellowing coloration, loss of spiky structure definition
Dose all-in-one liquid fertilizer weekly, ensure adequate lighting (low-medium), perform regular water changes to maintain nutrient balance
Melting
Moss turns translucent, becomes mushy, disintegrates rapidly after attachment
Improve water quality with frequent water changes, ensure adequate water circulation, check for extreme temperature fluctuations, verify fertilizer dosing is not excessive
Poor Attachment
Moss floats away from hardscape, fails to develop rhizoids, appears loose or drifting
Secure moss firmly with fishing line or plant weights, ensure hardscape surface is clean and porous, maintain gentle water flow to encourage attachment, wait 2-4 weeks for rhizoid development
