Clove Polyps
Clavularia sp.
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Clavulariidae
📍 Indo-Pacific reefs
Delicate, daisy-like polyps arranged in a mat — each has eight feathery tentacles. Green, white, or brown morphs with attractive pink stems. Spreads readily over rock and creates a lush carpet effect. Great flow indicator coral.
Tank Mates
Peaceful reef fish that won't nip or damage polyps; excellent for mixed reef systems
Non-aggressive and beneficial; helps maintain coral health without disturbing polyps
Small, peaceful fish that won't bother sedentary corals
Algae-eating snail that won't damage polyps and helps maintain tank cleanliness
Peaceful bottom-dweller that coexists well with filter-feeding corals
Common Diseases
Polyp Recession
Polyps fail to extend or gradually retract; reduced feeding response; visible tissue loss
Improve water quality, increase feeding frequency with phytoplankton, ensure adequate flow, and check for nearby allelopathic corals
Brown Jelly Disease
Brown, jelly-like film covering polyps; rapid tissue deterioration; foul odor
Isolate affected coral, perform daily water changes, remove affected tissue with clean tools, and treat with antibiotics if severe
Bacterial Infection
Discoloration, slime coating, polyp necrosis, or unusual odor from coral
Improve water quality, increase aeration, perform partial water changes, and consider antibiotic treatment in quarantine
Nutritional Deficiency
Pale coloration, reduced polyp extension, stunted growth, loss of vibrant pigmentation
Increase feeding frequency with quality phytoplankton and zooplankton; consider trace element supplements
