Fungia Plate Coral
Fungia spp.
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Fungiidae
📍 Indo-Pacific Reef Systems
Fungia plate corals are unusual free-living LPS corals that rest on the sandbed and can slowly move to find better conditions. They have a single large mouth surrounded by numerous short tentacles and come in a range of colours. They are sensitive to being placed on rough substrates.
Tank Mates
Peaceful reef fish that won't disturb the coral; compatible with medium flow and light requirements
Beneficial for tank health; will not harm the coral and help maintain water quality
Small, peaceful fish that stay in lower water column and won't disturb the sandbed coral
Algae grazer that helps maintain tank cleanliness without harming the coral
Another soft coral; keep adequate spacing to prevent stinging; both require similar light and feeding
Soft coral with similar care needs; maintain distance to avoid allelopathic interactions
Common Diseases
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, pale or white appearance, reduced polyp extension
Improve water quality, reduce light intensity temporarily, ensure stable temperature (24–27°C), and increase water flow; check calcium and alkalinity levels
Tissue Necrosis
Brown or black patches on coral tissue, rapid tissue recession, foul odor
Perform immediate water change, check for high nitrate/phosphate levels, improve flow around the coral, and consider antibiotic dips if infection is suspected
Parasitic Infection
White spots or films on tentacles, reduced feeding response, visible parasites
Quarantine affected coral if possible, perform freshwater dips (1–2 minutes), improve water quality, and monitor tank mates for signs of infestation
Skeleton Erosion
Visible pitting or erosion of the coral skeleton, reduced structural integrity
Ensure adequate calcium (400–450 ppm) and alkalinity (8–11 dKH), maintain stable pH (8.1–8.3), and avoid rough substrates that damage the base
