Willow Hygrophila
Hygrophila salicifolia
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Acanthaceae
📍 South and Southeast Asia
Long, willow-shaped leaves up to 15 cm (5.9 in) in length give this species a softer, more natural look compared to other Hygrophilas. The leaves are pale green and narrow, creating a flowing appearance in flow or current. One of the taller background choices in the genus.
Tank Mates
Small algae-eating fish that won't damage delicate stems or leaves
Peaceful schooling fish that benefit from plant shelter without harming vegetation
Shrimp graze algae on plants without damaging healthy tissue
Gentle mid-water swimmer that appreciates tall background plants for territory
Bottom-dwelling catfish that won't uproot or consume plant material
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements and complementary growth patterns
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency (Nitrogen/Iron)
Yellowing of new leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration despite adequate light
Increase fertilizer dosing with all-in-one liquid fertilizer or add iron supplements; test water parameters and adjust macronutrient balance
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green or brown algae coating leaf surfaces, reduced photosynthesis, plant vigor decline
Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water changes, introduce algae-eating fish or shrimp, manually remove affected leaves
Stem Rot
Blackening or mushy stems, leaf drop, foul odor from substrate
Remove affected stems immediately, improve water circulation, reduce organic debris accumulation, ensure substrate isn't compacted or anaerobic
Slow/Stunted Growth
Minimal new leaf development, small leaves, pale appearance despite adequate light
Increase CO₂ supplementation if using high-light setup, boost fertilizer dosing, verify temperature is 20-28°C, check for nutrient deficiencies
