Pipe Organ Coral

AnimaliaCnidariaAnthozoaTubiporidae

📍 Indo-Pacific reefs

Ask Finn

Unique soft coral with a rigid, blood-red calcium carbonate skeleton and vivid green polyps. The skeleton resembles organ pipes — stunning when visible at the base. More demanding than most soft corals but worth the effort.

Common Diseases

Coral Bleaching

Symptoms

Loss of green polyp coloration, skeleton becoming more visible, polyps failing to extend

Treatment

Improve water quality, reduce light intensity temporarily, ensure stable temperature and salinity, increase water flow, and perform partial water changes

Bacterial Infection

Symptoms

Tissue recession, visible slime coating, polyps not extending, discoloration or dark patches

Treatment

Increase water flow and aeration, perform 25% water change, maintain pristine water quality, consider antibiotic dips if severe, and isolate if possible

Polyp Necrosis

Symptoms

Polyps fail to open, tissue death starting from base, foul odor, skeleton exposure

Treatment

Improve water circulation, check for allelopathic coral neighbors, maintain stable parameters, perform water changes, and remove dead tissue if necessary

Parasitic Infestation

Symptoms

Visible parasites on polyps, reduced feeding response, tissue damage, polyps staying retracted

Treatment

Increase water flow and oxygenation, perform dips in freshwater or medicated solutions, maintain excellent water quality, and quarantine nearby corals if needed
