Blue Mystery Snail
Pomacea bridgesii
Animalia›Mollusca›Gastropoda›Ampullariidae
Variety of Mystery Snail · blue
📍 South America (captive developed)
Deep blue-grey form of the popular mystery snail. Strikingly beautiful against light sand or green plants. Active grazer of algae, uneaten food and detritus. One of the most popular planted tank snails.
Care Guide
Diet
Blue Mystery Snails are primarily herbivorous grazers that consume algae, biofilm, and detritus naturally present in the tank. Supplement their diet 2-3 times weekly with blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, or lettuce, and calcium-rich foods like cuttlebone or algae wafers to support shell health. They will also scavenge uneaten fish food, making them excellent cleanup crew members.
Behavior
These snails are nocturnal and most active during evening and night hours, spending days resting on plants, substrate, or tank walls. They are peaceful, solitary creatures that move slowly across surfaces while grazing; they do not interact socially with other snails or fish. Blue Mystery Snails can live 3-5 years and are known for their striking coloration, which makes them popular display animals in planted tanks.
Breeding
Breeding Blue Mystery Snails in captivity is extremely difficult and rarely successful in home aquariums. They require specific environmental triggers and male-female pairs are hard to distinguish; even when conditions are optimal, fry survival is low. Most aquarium specimens are captive-bred from wild stock, but natural reproduction in tanks is uncommon.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae-eating fish with identical water parameters and non-aggressive behavior
Small, peaceful schooling fish that won't disturb snails and thrive in similar conditions
Peaceful, slow-moving fish that respect snails and prefer similar warm water temperatures
Compatible snail species with identical care requirements and peaceful coexistence
Peaceful invertebrates sharing the same water parameters and algae-grazing behavior
Common Diseases
Shell Erosion
Pitting, thinning, or rough texture on shell; visible damage or holes in shell surface
Increase water pH to 7.0-8.0, add calcium supplements (cuttlebone, crushed eggshells, or calcium powder), and ensure adequate mineral content in water
Parasitic Infections
Lethargy, reduced feeding, visible parasites on body or shell, mucus buildup
Perform 25-30% water changes, quarantine affected snail, treat with anti-parasitic medication if available, and maintain excellent water quality
Bacterial Infections
Cloudy appearance on body, foul odor from shell opening, tissue decay, inability to retract into shell
Increase water changes to 50% weekly, maintain optimal water parameters (pH 7.0-8.0, temperature 18-28°C), and remove decaying food promptly
Starvation/Malnutrition
Thin body, weak movement, pale coloration, reduced shell growth
Provide regular supplemental feeding of blanched vegetables and calcium-rich foods 2-3 times weekly; ensure adequate algae growth in tank
