Ivory Mystery Snail
Pomacea bridgesii
Animalia›Mollusca›Gastropoda›Ampullariidae
Variety of Mystery Snail · ivory
📍 South America (captive developed)
Solid white-cream form of the mystery snail — looks like a tiny porcelain ornament. One of the most elegant snail colour forms. Effective detritus cleaner that adds a clean aesthetic to planted tanks.
Care Guide
Diet
Ivory Mystery Snails are primarily detritivores and algae grazers that consume algae, biofilm, and decaying plant matter throughout the day. Supplement their diet 2-3 times weekly with blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, or lettuce, and calcium-rich foods like cuttlebone or algae wafers to support shell health. They will also consume uneaten fish food and dead plant material, making them excellent cleanup crew members.
Behavior
These snails are nocturnal and most active during evening and night hours, spending days buried in substrate or hidden among plants. They are completely peaceful and solitary, moving slowly across surfaces while grazing. Ivory Mystery Snails are escape artists and require secure tank lids, as they may attempt to leave the water if stressed or if water quality declines.
Breeding
Breeding Ivory Mystery Snails in captivity is extremely difficult and rarely successful in home aquariums. They require specific environmental triggers and the male must deposit sperm packets that females must find and fertilize internally. Eggs are laid above the waterline in clusters, but most hobbyists do not achieve viable hatchlings without specialized conditions.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful algae-grazing habits and water requirements; both are non-aggressive detritivores
Compatible snail species with identical water needs and peaceful temperament; can cohabitate without conflict
Small, peaceful fish that won't disturb snails and thrive in similar freshwater conditions
Peaceful invertebrates with overlapping water parameters; both benefit from planted tanks with algae
Peaceful mid-water dweller that ignores snails; compatible temperature and pH ranges
Common Diseases
Shell Erosion
Pitting, thinning, or chalky appearance on shell surface; visible damage or holes in shell
Increase water pH to 7.0-8.0 and add calcium supplements (cuttlebone, calcium powder, or mineral supplements); perform regular water changes to maintain stable parameters
Parasitic Infections
Lethargy, reduced feeding, visible parasites on body or shell, abnormal mucus production
Quarantine affected snail; perform large water changes; treat with antiparasitic medications if available; maintain excellent water quality and remove decaying food promptly
Bacterial Shell Disease
Discoloration, fuzzy growth on shell, soft spots, or foul odor from shell
Improve water quality through frequent water changes; remove snail from main tank if severely affected; provide calcium-rich foods and maintain optimal pH and temperature
Starvation/Malnutrition
Withdrawn behavior, failure to emerge from shell, visible weight loss, dull shell coloration
Increase food availability with regular vegetable supplementation; ensure adequate algae growth in tank; provide calcium sources; check for overfeeding by other tank inhabitants
