Wild Mystery Snail
Pomacea bridgesii
Animalia›Mollusca›Gastropoda
Variety of Mystery Snail · wild
📍 South America
The Wild Mystery Snail displays the natural olive-brown or tan shell coloration found in nature. Often used as a contrast to the brightly colored captive-bred varieties; care is identical to all other mystery snail forms.
Care Guide
Diet
Wild Mystery Snails are primarily herbivorous and algae grazers, consuming algae from surfaces, plants, and substrate. Supplement their diet with blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, and lettuce 2-3 times weekly. Provide calcium-rich foods like cuttlebone or calcium supplements to support shell health.
Behavior
Mystery Snails are nocturnal and spend daylight hours hidden in plants or substrate, becoming active during evening and night hours. They are peaceful, solitary creatures that move slowly across surfaces grazing for food. They occasionally produce mucus trails and may seal themselves in their shells when stressed or during rest periods.
Breeding
Breeding Mystery Snails in captivity is difficult and rarely successful in standard aquariums. They require specific environmental triggers including water level changes, temperature fluctuations, and high humidity above the waterline for egg-laying. Females lay clusters of eggs above the water surface, but hatchlings rarely survive in community tanks.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae-eaters with similar grazing habits and non-aggressive behavior
Small, peaceful fish that won't disturb snails and occupy different tank zones
Peaceful and slow-moving, unlikely to harass snails despite being larger
Bottom-dwelling catfish that share similar peaceful temperament and non-predatory nature
Compatible snail species with identical care requirements and peaceful coexistence
Peaceful invertebrates that occupy similar ecological niches without conflict
Common Diseases
Shell Erosion
Pitting, thinning, or deterioration of shell surface; visible damage or holes in shell
Increase calcium supplementation through cuttlebone, calcium tablets, or mineral-rich foods; ensure pH is stable above 7.0; perform regular water changes
Parasitic Infections
Lethargy, reduced feeding, visible parasites on body or shell, mucus buildup
Quarantine affected snail; perform frequent water changes; treat with anti-parasitic medication if available; maintain optimal water conditions
Bacterial Infections
Cloudy appearance on shell or body, foul odor, tissue damage, reluctance to emerge from shell
Improve water quality through increased aeration and water changes; remove uneaten food promptly; use broad-spectrum antibiotics if condition worsens
Nutritional Deficiency
Slow growth, thin or brittle shell, reduced activity, pale coloration
Provide varied diet including blanched vegetables and algae-based foods; add calcium supplements; ensure adequate iodine through varied diet or supplements
