Purple Mystery Snail
Pomacea bridgesii
Animalia›Mollusca›Gastropoda
Variety of Mystery Snail · purple
📍 South America
The Purple Mystery Snail displays a rich purple or violet shell, ranging from light lavender to deep plum. Care is identical to other mystery snails — peaceful, great at consuming algae and leftover food, and compatible with most community fish.
Care Guide
Diet
Purple Mystery Snails are omnivorous and primarily feed on algae, decaying plant matter, and leftover food from fish. Supplement their diet with blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, cucumber) 2-3 times weekly and quality sinking pellets or algae wafers. Provide calcium-rich foods or cuttlebone to support shell health.
Behavior
These snails are nocturnal and spend much of the day hidden, becoming active at night to forage. They are peaceful, solitary creatures that rarely interact with tank mates and can live 3-4 years in proper conditions. They are excellent cleanup crew members, consuming excess food and algae while producing minimal bioload.
Breeding
Breeding Purple Mystery Snails in captivity is difficult and rarely successful in home aquariums. They require specific environmental triggers and are sensitive to water conditions during reproduction. Most captive snails do not breed reliably, making them effectively non-breeding in typical setups.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae eaters with identical water requirements and non-aggressive behavior
Small, peaceful community fish that won't disturb snails and prefer similar warm water
Peaceful and non-aggressive toward snails; prefers similar warm water conditions
Compatible snail species with identical care requirements and peaceful coexistence
Small shrimp that occupy different ecological niches and rarely interact with snails
Common Diseases
Shell Erosion
Pitting, thinning, or rough texture on shell; visible damage or holes in shell surface
Increase water pH to 7.0+ and add calcium supplements or cuttlebone; perform regular water changes to improve water quality
Parasitic Infections
Lethargy, reduced feeding, visible parasites on body or shell, mucus coating
Perform 25% water changes daily; quarantine affected snail; avoid copper-based treatments which are toxic to snails
Bacterial Shell Disease
Discoloration, white spots or patches on shell, foul odor, shell deterioration
Improve water quality with frequent water changes; maintain proper pH and temperature; remove decaying food promptly
Starvation
Withdrawn behavior, minimal movement, visible weight loss, failure to emerge from shell
Increase feeding frequency with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and quality sinking pellets; ensure adequate algae growth in tank
