Bucephalandra Brownie Ghost

Bucephalandra sp. 'Brownie Ghost'

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaAraceae

Variety of Bucephalandra · brownie ghost

📍 Southeast Asia

Ask Finn

Bucephalandra Brownie Ghost is among the most coveted collector buce varieties, producing small, dark leaves with a striking purple-silver sheen that shifts with viewing angle. It is rarer and commands higher prices than common buce varieties, and is slightly more sensitive to water quality and flow. CO2 injection and soft, slightly acidic water bring out the full iridescent coloration.

Common Diseases

Algae Overgrowth (Black Beard, Hair, or Green Spot Algae)

Symptoms

Dark or green filamentous growth on leaf surfaces; reduced light penetration; plant appears smothered

Treatment

Increase water flow, reduce light duration to 6–8 hours daily, perform manual removal with soft brush, add algae-eating shrimp (Amano or Red Cherry), or use liquid algaecide sparingly in planted tanks

Nutrient Deficiency (Iron or Macronutrient)

Symptoms

Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, loss of iridescent coloration, leaf holes or necrosis

Treatment

Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer (e.g., Thrive, EasyLife) 2–3 times weekly; test water parameters and adjust based on tank bioload; consider adding CO2 to improve nutrient uptake

Rhizome Rot (Poor Water Quality or Decay)

Symptoms

Soft, blackened rhizome; foul odor; leaves detach easily; plant fails to grow

Treatment

Improve water quality through frequent partial water changes (25–30% weekly); ensure gentle flow around rhizome; remove affected portions with sterile tools; reattach healthy sections to fresh hardscape

Slow or Stunted Growth

Symptoms

Minimal new leaf development over weeks; leaves remain small or discolored despite adequate light

Treatment

Verify CO2 levels (20–30 ppm recommended), increase fertilizer dosing, ensure stable temperature (22–27 °C), maintain pH 6.0–7.0, and confirm low nitrate levels (<15 ppm) to prevent nutrient imbalances
