Bucephalandra Kedagang

Bucephalandra sp. 'Kedagang'

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaAraceae

Variety of Bucephalandra · kedagang

📍 Southeast Asia

Ask Finn

Bucephalandra Kedagang is one of the most popular buce varieties, featuring rounded to elliptic dark-green leaves with a distinctive blue-green iridescent shimmer visible under good lighting. Like all bucephalandra it is endemic to Borneo, growing on rocky stream beds, and must be attached to hardscape rather than buried in substrate. Growth is slow but it is surprisingly tolerant once established.

Common Diseases

Rhizome Rot

Symptoms

Blackening or softening of the rhizome; mushy texture; leaf loss despite stable water parameters

Treatment

Improve water circulation and reduce organic buildup; trim affected areas with sterile tools; increase water changes; ensure rhizome is not buried in substrate

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green or black algae coating leaves; reduced light penetration; stunted new growth

Treatment

Reduce photoperiod to 6–8 hours daily; increase water changes; manually remove algae with soft brush; add algae-eating fish like Otocinclus or shrimp

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Pale or yellowing leaves; slow or halted growth; weak new shoots

Treatment

Dose all-in-one liquid fertilizer weekly at half-strength; ensure adequate bioload from fish waste; test water parameters for nitrogen and trace elements

Melting

Symptoms

Rapid leaf deterioration and transparency; leaves becoming translucent before falling off

Treatment

Maintain stable water parameters (pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28°C); perform 25% water changes twice weekly; ensure adequate light and CO₂ availability
