📍 Southeast Asia

Ask Finn

Bucephalandra Mini Catherine is a miniature buce cultivar with tiny, elongated leaves typically under 2 cm (0.8 in), making it ideal for nano aquascapes and detailed foreground hardscape work. Its leaves display a subtle dark-green to blue-green iridescence. Extremely slow growing, a single plant can take many months to form a small cluster, which only adds to its collector appeal.

Common Diseases

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating leaves; reduced light penetration to the plant

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating shrimp or fish, and manually remove visible algae with a soft brush

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, loss of iridescent coloration

Treatment

Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer weekly, ensure adequate macronutrients (especially iron), and verify water parameters support plant health

Rhizome Rot

Symptoms

Soft, blackened rhizome; leaves detaching or turning mushy; foul odor

Treatment

Improve water circulation, reduce organic waste buildup, ensure the rhizome is not buried in substrate, and perform frequent water changes; remove severely affected portions

Slow/No Growth

Symptoms

Plant remains unchanged for months; no new shoots or leaves developing

Treatment

Verify lighting is adequate (15–60 PAR minimum), check water parameters are within range, ensure fertilizer dosing is appropriate, and confirm the plant is firmly attached to hardscape
