Siamese Temple Plant
Hygrophila corymbosa
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Acanthaceae
Variety of Hygrophila Corymbosa · siamensis
📍 Thailand
A compact, narrow-leafed variant of H. corymbosa popular in Dutch-style planted tanks. The smaller leaf size makes it easier to fit into midground positions. Very tolerant and undemanding.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage plant leaves and help maintain tank cleanliness
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae and won't uproot or consume healthy plant tissue
Small, peaceful schooling fish that provide movement without disturbing planted substrate
Complementary foreground plant that pairs well with mid-background Hygrophila in Dutch layouts
Slow-growing companion plant with contrasting leaf shape and growth rate for balanced aquascaping
Peaceful dwarf cichlid that won't uproot plants and adds color without aggressive behavior
Common Diseases
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced light penetration, plant growth slowing
Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish (Otocinclus), and manually remove affected leaves. Ensure adequate CO2 and nutrients to outcompete algae.
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, loss of lower leaves
Dose all-in-one liquid fertilizer 1-2 times weekly. Test water for macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and adjust dosing. Perform 25-30% water changes weekly to prevent nutrient lockout.
Melting
Leaves becoming translucent, mushy stems, rapid tissue breakdown after planting
This is typically an adjustment phase in new tanks. Maintain stable water parameters (pH 6.0-8.0, temp 22-28°C), ensure adequate lighting, and dose fertilizers. Most plants recover within 2-3 weeks.
Root Rot
Blackened or mushy roots, foul odor from substrate, plant pulling up easily
Improve substrate circulation with gentle substrate vacuuming. Ensure adequate water flow and avoid anaerobic pockets. Trim affected roots and replant healthy portions. Add root tabs if substrate is depleted.
