Siamese Temple Plant

Hygrophila corymbosa

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaAcanthaceae

Variety of Hygrophila Corymbosa · siamensis

📍 Thailand

Ask Finn

A compact, narrow-leafed variant of H. corymbosa popular in Dutch-style planted tanks. The smaller leaf size makes it easier to fit into midground positions. Very tolerant and undemanding.

Common Diseases

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced light penetration, plant growth slowing

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish (Otocinclus), and manually remove affected leaves. Ensure adequate CO2 and nutrients to outcompete algae.

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, loss of lower leaves

Treatment

Dose all-in-one liquid fertilizer 1-2 times weekly. Test water for macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and adjust dosing. Perform 25-30% water changes weekly to prevent nutrient lockout.

Melting

Symptoms

Leaves becoming translucent, mushy stems, rapid tissue breakdown after planting

Treatment

This is typically an adjustment phase in new tanks. Maintain stable water parameters (pH 6.0-8.0, temp 22-28°C), ensure adequate lighting, and dose fertilizers. Most plants recover within 2-3 weeks.

Root Rot

Symptoms

Blackened or mushy roots, foul odor from substrate, plant pulling up easily

Treatment

Improve substrate circulation with gentle substrate vacuuming. Ensure adequate water flow and avoid anaerobic pockets. Trim affected roots and replant healthy portions. Add root tabs if substrate is depleted.
