Lionhead Goldfish
Carassius auratus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Fancy Goldfish · lionhead
📍 East Asia (China)
A fancy goldfish variety defined by its raspberry-like head growth (wen) covering the entire head and cheeks, paired with a rounded, dorsaless body and a split caudal fin. It is a slow swimmer that requires pristine water quality, benefits from a rounded tank or pond environment, and should be kept with other fancy goldfish of similar swimming ability.
Care Guide
Diet
Feed high-quality sinking pellets and flakes formulated for fancy goldfish once daily in small portions. Supplement with blanched vegetables (peas, zucchini) and occasional frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Avoid overfeeding, which degrades water quality—only feed what can be consumed in 2-3 minutes.
Behavior
Lionheads are slow, methodical swimmers that spend much time foraging along the bottom and mid-water. They are peaceful and social, preferring the company of other fancy goldfish varieties. Their distinctive head growth (wen) requires careful observation for signs of infection or damage.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is possible but requires significant space, cooler water temperatures (16-18°C), and conditioning with live foods. Spawning typically occurs in spring after a winter rest period. Fry are difficult to raise and require infusoria and microscopic foods initially; expect high mortality rates without dedicated breeding setup.
Tank Mates
Other fancy varieties like Ryukin and Oranda share similar slow swimming speeds and water quality needs
Peaceful scavenger that helps maintain water quality without competing for food or space
Algae eater that won't be harmed by slow-moving goldfish and helps with tank maintenance
Hardy algae grazer that goldfish typically ignore due to hard shell protection
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid gill movement, flashing against surfaces, lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform 25% water changes daily, use aquarium salt (1 tsp per gallon) or ich medication; treat for 10-14 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, fin shortening
Perform 50% water change immediately, improve water quality with frequent changes, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure pristine conditions
Wen Infection/Ulceration
Redness, swelling, or open sores on head growth; discharge or fuzzy growth on wen
Maintain excellent water quality with frequent changes, use salt baths (1 tsp per gallon for 15 minutes daily), apply topical antibacterial treatment if available
Constipation/Swim Bladder Disorder
Floating at surface, sinking, loss of buoyancy control, bloating
Feed blanched peas as laxative, fast for 1-2 days, maintain warm water (24-26°C), ensure high water quality; avoid overfeeding
