Acropora
Acropora sp.
Acropora is the largest and most diverse genus of stony corals on earth, encompassing hundreds of species forming branching, table, and bushy morphologies in nearly every colour imaginable. They are the primary reef-building corals and are the benchmark for advanced reef aquariums β demanding pristine, stable water chemistry, very high light, moderate to high flow, and expert-level nutrient management. In well-maintained SPS tanks they reward with breathtaking growth and colouration.
Brunei Beauty
Betta macrostoma
Betta macrostoma, the Brunei Beauty, is widely considered the most beautiful wild betta species β males display deep orange-red bodies, black-bordered fins, and a striking bicolour pattern. It is a large, powerful mouthbrooder endemic to cool, clear streams in Brunei and Sarawak and is critically endangered in the wild. Keeping it successfully demands expert-level water quality management, cool temperatures, and near-perfect breeding conditions.
Discus
Symphysodon spp.
Discus are considered the 'king of the aquarium' for their spectacular circular shape and brilliant colours. They are demanding fish requiring pristine water, warm temperatures, and frequent water changes. Best kept in species tanks or with very peaceful, warm-water tankmates.
Elegance Coral
Catalaphyllia jardinei
Elegance coral was once considered easy but is now classified as demanding due to a syndrome ('elegance coral decline') that causes rapid tissue recession in many captive specimens, the cause of which is still debated. Specimens sourced from Australia's Great Barrier Reef tend to fare better than Indo-Pacific stock. It requires low light, minimal flow, and sandy substrate β placing it on rock causes tissue damage and death.
Feather Duster Eriocaulon
Eriocaulon sp. 'Feather Duster'
Rare and highly sought-after Eriocaulon with long, feathery white-green leaves that fan out like a plume. A collector's plant demanding very soft, slightly acidic water and strong light. Breathtaking when healthy.
Harlequin Shrimp
Hymenocera picta
Extraordinarily beautiful shrimp with large flat claws and white-and-pink/purple spotted pattern. Specialist predator that only eats starfish β a specific feeding commitment.
Mandarin Dragonet
Synchiropus splendidus
Arguably the most beautiful fish in the hobby. Requires a mature reef with abundant copepods. Not for beginners. Will starve if not given live food.
Mini Eriocaulon
Eriocaulon cinereum
Tiny rosette plant forming grass-like tufts. One of the most challenging aquarium plants to keep long-term. Needs very soft, acidic water, strong light, and CO2.
Regal Angelfish
Pygoplites diacanthus
Breathtakingly beautiful with alternating white-and-orange bars. Notoriously difficult to feed in captivity. Red Sea specimens generally adapt better than Pacific ones.
Sulawesi Cardinal Shrimp
Caridina dennerli
The Sulawesi Cardinal Shrimp is arguably the most stunning freshwater shrimp β a brilliant red body adorned with white spots, from the ancient alkaline lakes of Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is also the most demanding, requiring very warm water, elevated pH, and unique mineral composition mimicking its ancient lake habitat β parameters almost opposite to other Caridina species. It is intolerant of standard aquasoil buffering and must be housed in species-specific setups using Sulawesi mineral salts.
Sulawesi Harlequin Shrimp
Caridina spinata
Stunning white shrimp with deep blue or red spots. Endemic to ancient Sulawesi lakes with unique water chemistry. Requires warm, alkaline, hard water β a true specialist shrimp.
Waterwort
Elatine triandra
One of the finest-leaved carpet plants in existence β creates an almost moss-like lawn of tiny round leaves. Extremely challenging; requires CO2, very high light, and excellent nutrient control. The pinnacle of carpeting plants.
