Cryptocoryne Wendtii Mi Oya
Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Mi Oya'
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Alismatales›Araceae
📍 Sri Lanka
Larger C. wendtii variant from the Mi Oya river. Reddish-brown leaves that can reach 8+ inches. Impressive for a background crypt.
Tank Mates
Algae-eating fish that won't damage plant leaves; beneficial for tank cleanliness
Small, peaceful fish that navigate around plants without uprooting or damaging foliage
Shrimp graze algae on plant surfaces and won't harm established crypts
Companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and slow growth rate
Foreground moss that complements background crypt placement and shares care requirements
Peaceful cichlid that may dig but won't directly damage mature plants
Common Diseases
Crypt Rot
Leaves become translucent, mushy, or dissolve; rhizome softens and decays
Improve water circulation, reduce organic waste, perform partial water changes, remove affected portions, ensure adequate potassium and micronutrients
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, holes in older leaves
Dose liquid fertilizer containing macronutrients and trace elements; consider root tabs; test and adjust water parameters
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced photosynthesis, plant decline
Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, improve water circulation
Melting
Rapid leaf deterioration after planting, leaves becoming transparent and dissolving
Common during acclimation; maintain stable parameters, ensure adequate lighting and nutrients, be patient as plant adjusts over 2-4 weeks
